St George, Bristol
My own garden, located in East Bristol.
Part of a modern housing development where the soil is shallow, stony, and extremely challenging. The planting has been carefully designed to thrive in these conditions, creating a resilient and characterful space that reflects both the site and ourselves.
North facing and close to the River Avon, the garden’s palette draws on local native species such as Willow, Cornus and Alder, forging connections to the surrounding landscape and encouraging wildlife to visit.
Salvaged paving slabs, reclaimed clay pavers and crushed waste concrete as gravel combine to form the hard landscape palette, harmonious in tone to the surrounding properties.
Three seating areas are positioned to follow the movement of the sun: a simple breakfast perch on reclaimed timber blocks catches the morning light, a dining space at the far end of the garden makes for an ideal spot for lunch, and a comfortable sofa area captures the warmth of the evening, often spent with friends.
As a garden designer, this space has become my playground. A living sketchbook for experimentation, and a personal retreat for reflection and inspiration during the working day.
