On Tropic, Tatton Park
On Tropic celebrates the sub-tropical gardens of Cornwall, reimagined within a northern, suburban context at Tatton Park. This environmentally conscious design replaces traditional British planting with a bold, tropical-inspired palette that reflects the possibilities of a warming climate.
With climate change as a central theme, the garden explores how low-impact design and adaptive planting can shape the gardens of the future. A woven willow backdrop provides privacy and texture, while plants such as Fargesia and Catalpa define the boundaries and create a sense of enclosure.
Two timber boardwalks cross the space, paired with generous stepping stones that lead to a secluded seating area surrounded by luxurious planting. These materials, together with a simple steel framework supporting evergreen climbers, echo those found in the Cornish gardens that inspired the design.
On Tropic invites visitors to imagine how our gardens might evolve; expressive, resilient, and respectful to a changing environment.
